US Army Perscom: Welcome
The US Army PERSCOM (Personnel Command) is the
Human Relations Command of the US Army. It is also known as
US Total Army Personnel. This command plays a major role in
the US Military by tracking
the careers and lives of active duty, guardsmen, reservists,
families and veterans. The US Army PERSCOM has its headquarters
in Alexandria, VA with an additional location in St. Louis,
MO.
The goal of the US Army
PERSCOM is to assist people who are transitioning from one part
of the force to another. It helps those people in the US Military
in matters related to promotion, entitlements and benefits.
The US Army PERSCOM came into
shape following a US Military announcement on April 9, 2003.
It sought to create a single command to perform the functions
of the US Army Reserve Personnel Command in St. Louis and the
Total Army Personnel Command in Alexandria, Va.
The US Army PERSCOM formally activated on 2 October
2003. The aims of creating this command include streamlining
headquarters, creating more agile and responsive staffs, focusing
on mission, reducing layers of review and approval and transforming
the Army. This command was the first step in consolidating personnel
services throughout the Army in the US Military.
The US Army PERSCOM aims at improving
the quality of personnel support to the Soldiers, families and
civilian workforce. It seeks to appropriate and integrate some
of the personnel systems of all Army components. The aim is
to improve and optimize the utilization of the US Military’s
human resources in both war and peace. It has a wide variety
of responsibilities. Those include all personnel management
functions for the distribution, development, retention and transition
of Soldiers.
There are many challenges ahead for the US
Army PERSCOM. The biggest will be to take care of all
civilian employees of the US Military
worldwide. However, it seems that this command is moving in
the right direction. Recently it organized an Army Spouse Employment
Partnership Program in Arlington, VA. The topic was expanding
employment opportunities for Army spouses while fulfilling the
demand for skilled workers.
